Canon's versatile RF-mount prime with IS, macro capability, and an affordable price.
The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro was introduced at the launch of the RF system in 2018 as one of the initial RF prime lenses. It combines three features in one compact prime: a 35mm full-frame perspective, built-in Image Stabilisation, and a macro capability reaching 0.5x (1:2) magnification at the 0.17m minimum focus distance. The STM motor enables near-silent continuous AF suited to video recording. At 305g and a 52mm filter thread it is an accessible and compact RF wide-standard prime positioned as the affordable entry into the RF prime lineup without L-series weather sealing.
The optical design uses 11 elements in 9 groups. Nine aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The 52mm filter thread is small and lightweight, compatible with compact circular polariser and protection filter collections. At 305g the lens is well-matched to compact RF bodies such as the EOS RP and entry R-series bodies for a light travel combination. Minimum focus distance of 0.17m achieves 0.5x (1:2) reproduction — half life-size on the sensor — enabling close-up photography without a dedicated macro lens. IS is built in, providing handheld stability at both normal shooting distances and macro magnifications. There is no weather sealing.
The 35mm full-frame perspective is the classic wide-standard field of view — slightly wider than the 50mm normal, used for environmental portraiture, street photography, and travel where a modestly wide, natural context is appropriate. The 0.5x macro capability at 0.17m extends the lens's versatility to product, food, and detail photography at half life-size without a separate macro lens. IS is particularly useful at macro distances, where camera vibration at high magnification amplifies shake. The STM motor's near-silent operation suits video work where AF motor noise would be captured on-camera.
On the used market the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro is widely available at accessible prices — one of the most affordable RF primes. Condition checks: STM AF motor response, IS engagement (observe stabilised viewfinder output), and front element for any coating marks. The lens has no weather sealing and is not suited for use in rain or dusty conditions. The Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM (2023) provides a wider maximum aperture and L-series weather sealing at a substantially higher price. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount bodies.
