Canon's affordable RF-mount nifty fifty, bringing fast prime optics to mirrorless.
The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM was released in October 2020 as the most affordable native prime for Canon's RF mirrorless system. It fills the same role as the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM — an accessible fast standard prime for newcomers and a lightweight option for experienced shooters — but was designed from scratch for the RF mount's optical geometry. On full-frame EOS R bodies the 50mm focal length provides a natural, near-standard field of view for everyday shooting. The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM was the first RF prime at an entry-level price, filling a gap that had persisted for the first two years of the RF system.
The optical design uses 6 elements in 5 groups. The 43mm filter thread is smaller than most RF-system lenses — most standard filter collections will not fit without a step-up ring. At 160g the lens is one of the lightest RF-mount primes, practical for daily carry on compact EOS R bodies. A minimum focus distance of 0.30m allows closer subject work than most kit zooms, extending its usefulness to informal table-top and still-life shooting. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh at mid-apertures. The STM (Stepping Motor) autofocus is quiet and smooth, well suited to video recording. There is no built-in image stabilisation; stabilisation relies on in-body IS from compatible bodies. The customisable control ring on the barrel can be assigned to aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation. Build is primarily plastic with no weather sealing.
As a standard prime on full-frame RF bodies the 50mm field of view is close to natural human vision, making it versatile for portraiture, documentary, and everyday photography. Optical quality is an improvement over the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM: centre sharpness is better at f/1.8 and chromatic aberration is better controlled. The f/1.8 aperture provides meaningful background separation that distinguishes it from kit zoom alternatives. STM autofocus is responsive in stills and smooth during video tracking. The control ring adds practical functionality — aperture can be set directly on the lens without navigating body menus. At 160g it is one of the lightest RF lenses available.
The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is among the most affordable RF lenses available used and represents the clearest value starting point for RF prime photography. Condition checks should cover the AF motor, control ring rotation, and aperture blades for oil contamination. The 43mm filter thread is a practical inconvenience — most standard filter collections will not fit. No full-frame third-party RF 50mm prime from Sigma or Tamron is currently available. The RF 50mm f/1.4L USM and f/1.2L USM offer wider apertures at substantially higher prices. The natural starting point for RF system prime photography.
