Canon's budget RF-mount APS-C telephoto zoom — lightweight 88-336mm equivalent for the R50 and R100.
The Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM was released in 2023 as a compact telephoto zoom for Canon's APS-C RF-mount cameras including the R10, R50, and R100. Covering an 88-336mm equivalent range, it provides affordable telephoto reach for wildlife, sports, and travel photography in Canon's newest mirrorless ecosystem.
Optical performance is acceptable for the class. Centre sharpness is decent throughout the range. The IS stabilisation provides approximately 4.5 stops of correction, essential given the slow aperture. STM stepping motor AF is smooth and quiet, well-suited to video. The f/7.1 aperture at 210mm is very slow, demanding good light or high ISO for action photography.
Canon RF mount, APS-C coverage. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 270 grams — remarkably light for the focal length range. Build quality is basic plastic but functional. IS and STM features provide good value for the price. The lens is very compact when retracted, matching the small form factor of Canon's APS-C RF bodies.
Relatively new with limited used market availability. Check for smooth IS and AF operation. An adequate entry-level telephoto for Canon's latest APS-C mirrorless cameras. The slow aperture is the main limitation. The Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM offers more reach on full-frame bodies, while the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM remains a strong DSLR alternative.
