Canon's revolutionary compact 70-200mm f/2.8L for mirrorless, dramatically lighter than the EF version.
The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM launched in 2019 and immediately made headlines for its revolutionary non-extending internal zoom design. At 1070g it is 420g lighter than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II while maintaining L-series optical quality. It represents one of the biggest advantages of the RF mount's design.
Optical quality is outstanding with excellent sharpness across the frame at all focal lengths, matching or exceeding the EF IS II. IS provides approximately 5 stops of stabilisation, extending to 8 stops with IBIS bodies. Dual Nano USM motors deliver extremely fast autofocus. The non-extending zoom barrel is unique among 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses.
Canon RF mount only, 77mm filter thread. The non-extending design was enabled by the RF mount's short flange distance and is not possible on EF mount. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II remains available for adapted use but is heavier and larger.
Holds value well on the used market. Check IS operation, AF speed and accuracy at all focal lengths, and the zoom mechanism for smoothness. Inspect weather seals. One of the most impressive zoom lenses Canon has ever made and a strong argument for the RF system.
