Canon's revolutionary compact 70-200mm f/2.8L for mirrorless, dramatically lighter than the EF version.
The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM was introduced in 2019 as Canon's first native RF constant-aperture telephoto zoom, adopting an internal zoom design that maintains a constant barrel length throughout the focal range. At approximately 1,070g it is substantially lighter than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II at approximately 1,490g — a 420g reduction representing one of the most significant weight improvements achieved moving from EF to RF-native optics. Weather sealing to L-series standards is built throughout.
The optical design uses 17 elements in 13 groups, including fluorite, BR, UD, and aspherical elements. Nine aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The 77mm filter thread is the L-series professional standard, consistent with the EF 70-200mm variants and the RF 100-500mm for filter carry-over. At approximately 1,070g the lens enables more extended handheld use than its EF predecessors. Minimum focus distance of 0.7m is shorter than the EF IS II's 1.2m — enabling closer environmental portrait framing. IS is built in; on compatible EOS R bodies IS cooperates with body IBIS for combined stabilisation effect. Ring USM provides fast, silent AF with full-time manual focus override.
The internal zoom design's practical benefit is consistent balance when moving through the focal range — the constant barrel length maintains the same weight distribution from 70mm to 200mm. This is particularly useful for gimbal-mounted video work, where extending barrels disrupt balance mid-use. The 420g weight reduction versus the EF IS II is meaningful for all-day handheld event and sports photography. The 0.7m minimum focus provides useful reach for environmental portraiture and close telephoto framing that the longer MFD of EF variants prevented.
The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is widely available on the used market. Condition checks: IS operation (observe stabilised viewfinder output on half-press), ring USM response across the full range, L-series sealing at the zoom barrel and mount, and front element for any coating damage. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II via EF-RF adapter provides comparable image quality at lower used prices for photographers not requiring the RF-native design or lighter weight. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount bodies.
