Canon's latest RF 70-200mm f/2.8 — compact internal zoom design with outstanding optics and fast AF.
The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z was released in October 2024 as the updated G Master-tier telephoto zoom for Canon RF full-frame bodies, adding teleconverter compatibility — the 'Z' suffix specifically denotes compatibility with Canon 1.4x and 2x RF teleconverters, which the original non-Z RF 70-200mm f/2.8L does not accept. Eleven circular aperture blades. Clickless aperture ring. 5.5-stop IS. At approximately 1,100g and 77mm filter thread.
The optical design uses 18 elements in 15 groups (versus 17 elements in 13 groups in the original). Eleven circular aperture blades (versus 9). The 77mm filter thread. Approximately 1,100g. Minimum focus distance with 0.30x maximum magnification (versus 0.23x original). 5.5-stop IS. Clickless aperture ring for video. Compatible with Canon 1.4x and 2x RF teleconverters.
The teleconverter compatibility is the Z version's defining addition: the original RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM collapsible design cannot accept teleconverters due to the rear element position. The Z version's non-collapsible design provides the rear element clearance for TC mounting. With the 1.4x TC, the effective range extends to 98-280mm f/4; with the 2x TC, 140-400mm f/5.6. The 11-blade circular aperture provides improved circular bokeh versus the original's 9 blades.
On the used market the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z is an October 2024 product with limited used availability. Condition checks: IS engagement, AF motor response, 77mm front element for marks, clickless aperture ring operation, and TC mount compatibility. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount bodies.
