Canon's versatile RF portrait prime with IS, macro capability, and smooth STM autofocus.
The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM was released in 2020 as a dual-purpose portrait and macro lens for the RF system, combining an 85mm f/2 portrait perspective with 1:2 reproduction at minimum focus distance — half life-size, not the 1:1 of dedicated macro lenses. IS is built in for handheld close-up work. The STM motor provides quiet continuous AF for video. At 500g and 67mm filter thread it is the most compact RF portrait prime, substantially lighter than the RF 85mm f/1.2L.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 11 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 67mm filter thread is the compact Canon portrait prime standard. At 500g the lens is moderate for an IS-equipped 85mm. Minimum focus distance of 0.35m achieves 1:2 (half life-size) magnification. IS provides handheld stability for close-focus macro work. STM motor enables quiet continuous AF for video shooting. f/2 maximum aperture.
The 1:2 magnification extends the lens beyond standard portrait use: at 0.35m minimum focus, small products, flowers, and insects can be framed at half life-size — practical macro work for subjects that do not require 1:1 coverage. The 85mm portrait perspective and f/2 aperture provide standard head-and-shoulders framing and subject separation for portrait sessions. IS and STM make it practical for macro video work where continuous AF and stabilisation are required simultaneously.
On the used market the RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is available at mid-range RF portrait prime prices. Condition checks: IS operation, STM AF response at macro and portrait distances, and front element condition. The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM provides f/1.2 maximum aperture for significantly greater subject separation at much higher cost and weight. The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM provides true 1:1 magnification. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount bodies.
