Canon's first power zoom wide-angle for APS-C RF-mount mirrorless bodies.
The Canon RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ is a power zoom lens for Canon's APS-C RF-mount cameras, launched in 2024 as Canon's first RF-mount lens with motorised zoom. On APS-C bodies such as the EOS R50, R7, and R10, it covers a 22-48mm equivalent range — a practical wide-to-normal span for walk-around, vlogging, and hybrid shooting. The power zoom drive is electronically controlled and operates silently through the camera's zoom dial or a touch-sensitive ring on the barrel. The optical formula uses 10 elements in 9 groups, including one UD element for chromatic aberration control and two aspherical elements for distortion reduction. At 181g with a fixed-length barrel that does not extend during zooming, and a 58mm filter thread, it is one of the most compact lenses in the RF-S range.
Image stabilisation is rated at 5.5 stops standalone and up to 7 stops in coordination with in-body IS on compatible EOS R bodies, making the lens usable at lower shutter speeds for handheld video. Optical performance is competent for a consumer kit lens: centre sharpness is good across the zoom range, particularly at mid-focal lengths, with corner performance improving substantially from f/5.6 to f/8. The UD element keeps lateral chromatic aberration well-controlled for this price class. The power zoom operates at a consistent speed useful for in-camera zoom transitions without the frame jumps associated with manual pulls. Minimum focus distance of 0.15m at 30mm delivers a 0.38x maximum magnification — useful for tightly framed product shots.
The RF-S mount restricts use to APS-C Canon EOS R bodies (R50, R10, R7, R100). On full-frame RF bodies (R5, R6, R3) the camera activates an APS-C crop mode automatically, reducing the imaging circle. The 58mm filter thread accepts standard circular polarisers and ND filters. STM autofocus provides fast, near-silent operation suited to both stills and video tracking. No weather sealing is provided. The fixed-length barrel and 65mm total length make it a practical everyday lens for compact APS-C kits. A 7-blade aperture diaphragm is used throughout the zoom range.
The RF-S 14-30mm PZ suits EOS R APS-C users who shoot video or want smooth zoom transitions in hybrid work. For pure stills photography at constant aperture, the step down to f/6.3 at 30mm limits available-light versatility and a fast prime is a useful companion. The power zoom differentiates it meaningfully from the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 kit. Being a 2024 lens, used supply is still thin and prices track close to new; negotiate against any cosmetic wear. Confirm the power zoom responds cleanly across its speed range and that the STM AF locks correctly in continuous mode.
