Canon's ultra-compact RF-mount APS-C kit zoom, designed for the R10 and R50.
The Canon RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM was introduced in 2022 as the standard kit lens for Canon's APS-C RF-mount cameras, bundled with the EOS R10, R50, and R100. Covering a 29-72mm equivalent range, it was designed to prioritise compactness and affordability as the primary entry into the RF-S ecosystem. At approximately 130g it is one of the smallest Canon zoom lenses produced. The RF-S designation means the lens is designed for APS-C sensors; while it will physically mount on full-frame EOS R bodies, it activates a crop mode and is not designed as a standard full-frame zoom.
The optical design uses 7 elements in 7 groups. The 49mm filter thread is not widely shared across Canon RF or EF-S systems — most standard filter collections will not fit without a step-up ring. At 130g the lens is among the lightest Canon zoom lenses, keeping the combined weight with an EOS R10 or R50 in compact territory. Minimum focus distance is 0.20m at 18mm, enabling close-up work on small subjects and informal macro-style shooting. IS provides 4 stops of compensation independently; Canon's Coordinated IS on compatible RF-S bodies extends the combined figure to up to 6.5 stops. The STM stepping motor provides quiet, smooth autofocus for video recording. Variable aperture runs from f/4.5 at 18mm to f/6.3 at 45mm — a significant constraint in low light. Build is entirely lightweight plastic with no weather sealing.
For everyday photography the 18-45mm range covers the most common situations — landscapes, indoor snapshots, and casual portraits. The 130g weight and compact form make the lens-and-body combination genuinely portable for travel. IS and body IBIS together provide practical handheld stability across the zoom range in good light. The f/6.3 maximum aperture at 45mm is the defining limitation: low-light shooting demands substantially higher ISO settings than faster alternatives. STM autofocus is smooth and near-silent for video. The 0.20m close-focus distance at 18mm allows useful macro-ish shooting of nearby subjects.
On the used market the RF-S 18-45mm is among the most affordable RF lenses, often sold bundled with R10 or R50 bodies. Condition checks should cover IS operation and STM motor responsiveness. The RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM offers dramatically more versatility at a moderate premium and is where most users migrate. Adapted EF-S glass via the EF-EOS R adapter provides additional options including faster apertures. The 49mm filter thread is not widely shared with other Canon lenses. An adequate starter lens for the RF-S ecosystem.
