Canon's ultra-compact RF-S kit zoom — the pancake-like 18-45mm for the R50 and R100.
The Canon RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM was released in 2022 as Canon's most compact standard zoom for the RF-S APS-C mirrorless system. Covering a 29-72mm equivalent range, it serves as the entry-level kit lens for cameras like the R50 and R100. Its remarkably small size and light weight make it one of the most pocketable standard zooms available.
Optical performance is adequate for a kit zoom. Centre sharpness is acceptable with improvement when stopped down. IS stabilisation provides approximately 4.5 stops of correction, compensating for the slow variable aperture. STM motor is smooth and quiet for video. The slow aperture starting at f/4.5 limits low-light capability but keeps the lens extremely compact.
Canon RF mount, APS-C. Filter thread is 49mm — very small. Weight is approximately 130 grams — extraordinarily light, almost pancake-class. Build quality is basic but functional plastic. The retractable design further reduces size when not in use. IS and STM make it more capable than the specifications suggest. No weather sealing.
Available on the used market from kit splits. Check IS and STM operation. The compact size is the key selling point — paired with an R50, the combination fits in a jacket pocket. Not for demanding photography, but outstanding as an ultralight everyday carry lens. The RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM offers far more range at increased size.
