Canon's lightweight APS-C telephoto zoom for RF-mount with IS and quiet STM motor.
The Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM was launched in 2023 as the telephoto companion to the RF-S 18-45mm and 18-150mm kit lenses. Covering an 88-336mm equivalent range, it provides useful telephoto reach for Canon's APS-C RF mirrorless bodies like the R10, R50, and R7.
Optical quality is adequate with decent centre sharpness at shorter focal lengths but noticeable softness at 210mm wide open. IS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. The STM motor is quiet for video. Build is lightweight plastic at just 270g, making it easy to carry alongside a kit zoom.
Canon RF-S mount only, 55mm filter thread. The slow f/7.1 maximum aperture at 210mm is limiting for autofocus performance on bodies with fewer AF points. The RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM offers more reach on full-frame bodies. No third-party RF-S telephoto alternatives exist.
Affordable used. Check IS operation across the full zoom range and AF performance at 210mm in various lighting. The slow aperture makes this a daylight telephoto. The Canon EF 55-250mm IS STM adapted via the EF-RF adapter is an alternative with a faster aperture.
