Canon's spatial video lens — dual 7.8mm f/4 for VR/spatial content creation on RF-S cameras.
The Canon RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM Dual was released approximately 2023 as a specialised dual-fisheye lens for VR180 and immersive 3D video production. The lens houses two side-by-side fisheye optical systems that simultaneously capture overlapping fields of view for stereoscopic 3D content. Canon RF-S mount — APS-C coverage only.
f/4 maximum aperture. Two 190°+ fisheye lenses in a single barrel, simultaneously capturing left-eye and right-eye perspectives for VR180 recording. Canon RF-S mount (APS-C, for use on EOS R-series APS-C bodies including R7, R10, R50). STM (stepping motor) AF. Compatible with Canon's EOS VR utility for VR180 content creation.
The dual-fisheye design is fundamentally different from a single fisheye or a standard zoom: the two lenses are permanently fixed in their stereo configuration, with the camera and lens together forming a self-contained VR180 capture device. The RF-S designation means it is incompatible with full-frame RF-mount bodies such as the EOS R5 or R6 series.
On the used market the Canon RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM Dual is a niche lens for VR180 content creators. Condition checks: both fisheye front elements for marks or scratches, RF-S mount contacts, STM motor AF response. Requires compatible EOS R-series APS-C body and Canon EOS VR utility for optimal workflow.
