Chinon's mechanical metered-manual K-mount SLR — the CM-3, 1979.
The Chinon CM-3 was a 35mm film SLR made from 1979 in Chinon's CM line of mechanically shuttered K-mount bodies. Where Chinon's CE cameras were electronic and automatic, the CM series was aimed at buyers who wanted simple manual control, and the CM-3 used the Pentax K bayonet for broad lens choice.
It is a single-lens-reflex camera for 35mm film with the Pentax K mount. The CM-3 is a manual-exposure SLR with TTL metering to guide settings and a mechanically controlled focal-plane shutter. Because the shutter is mechanical, the body can fire without a battery, with the battery needed only for the light meter.
It suits beginners and students learning manual exposure, since the metered manual approach and mechanical shutter make it a dependable teaching camera. The K mount keeps lenses affordable and easy to find, and the simple controls are forgiving to learn on.
On the used market the CM-3 is cheap and appeals to those wanting a mechanical K-mount body. Check foam seals and mirror-damper foam, confirm the mechanical shutter fires at all speeds even with the battery removed, and test the meter separately with a fresh cell. Inspect the advance, rewind and screen; Chinon spares are limited but the mechanical design is comparatively serviceable.
