DJI's popular mid-range drone with 48MP 1/2-inch sensor and 34-minute flight time.
The DJI Mavic Air 2 was released in April 2020 as DJI's mid-range consumer drone, sitting between the Mavic Mini and Mavic 2 Pro in the lineup. It introduced 4K/60fps recording, an 8K Hyperlapse mode, and HyperSmooth 3.0 electronic stabilisation to the Mavic Air series. A 1/2-inch CMOS sensor provides 48MP stills capability using Quad Bayer pixel binning, with 12MP effective output in standard modes. Three-way obstacle avoidance covers front, rear, and below. Drone weight approximately 570g.
The 1/2-inch CMOS sensor records 4K at up to 60fps and 1080p at up to 240fps for slow-motion sequences. 48MP stills use Quad Bayer pixel binning; effective stills resolution in standard output is 12MP. HyperSmooth 3.0 electronic image stabilisation reduces drone motion for handheld-equivalent video output. Obstacle avoidance operates in three directions: front, rear, and below. Maximum flight time approximately 27 minutes. OcuSync 2.0 provides transmission at up to 10km range. Drone weight approximately 570g, excluding controller.
The 4K/60fps capability and HyperSmooth 3.0 stabilisation were the Mavic Air 2's primary practical improvements over the original Mavic Air: 4K at 60fps enables 2.5× slow motion at full 4K resolution, extending creative flexibility for action and travel content. The 1/2-inch sensor provides better dynamic range and low-light performance than the 1/2.3-inch sensors typical of smaller drones. Three-way obstacle avoidance reduces collision risk in complex environments compared to front-only systems.
On the used market the Mavic Air 2 is available at affordable consumer drone prices, with the Mavic Air 2S and Mini 4 Pro representing later generations. Condition checks: all gimbal axes for smooth movement and no vibration in recorded footage, battery health (flight time degrades with cycle count), propeller condition, and remote controller. The DJI Mavic Air 2 Fly More Combo bundles three batteries, a charging hub, and ND filters — useful if additional batteries are needed. Fixed integrated lens; not interchangeable.
