DJI's first action camera, competing directly with GoPro with a dual-screen design.
The DJI Osmo Action was released in 2019 as DJI's first action camera, introducing a dual-display design — both a rear touchscreen and a front-facing colour display — enabling the user to monitor framing while filming self-facing content without a separate monitor. The front display differentiated it from contemporary GoPro models that lacked a front screen. RockSteady electronic stabilisation provides smooth footage for handheld and active use. The camera is waterproof to 11m without housing.
The 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor captures 12MP stills and 4K video at up to 60fps; 1080p records at up to 240fps for slow-motion sequences. RockSteady electronic image stabilisation reduces shake for handheld and active video capture. Waterproof to 11m (36 feet) without additional housing — rated for drops from 5m. The dual-display design includes both a rear touchscreen and a front-facing colour display. Body weight approximately 124g with battery, single microSD card slot.
The dual-display design is the Osmo Action's defining practical differentiator: for vlogging and self-facing video, the front display provides a live view of framing that single-screen action cameras cannot offer. RockSteady stabilisation is competitive with GoPro HyperSmooth for moderate activity and handheld walking. The 11m waterproof rating without housing exceeds GoPro's 10m standard (GoPro Hero 7-8 era), extending underwater use. 4K/60fps provides standard high-frame-rate 4K output for social and documentary content.
On the used market the original Osmo Action is affordable, with Osmo Action 2, 3, 4, and 5 Pro representing successive generations. Condition checks: both displays for any scratches or dead pixels (especially the front display), lens element, waterproof sealing at the battery and microSD doors, and battery charge capacity. Compatible with DJI Osmo Action 2019 accessories; later Osmo Action 2/3/4/5 use different form factors and accessories.
