Classic East German SLR kit with Exakta Varex IIa body and Carl Zeiss Pancolar 50mm f/2.
The Exakta Varex 11a (also known as the Exakta VX IIa) is a 35mm SLR camera manufactured by Ihagee in Dresden, East Germany, bundled here with the Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50mm f/2 lens. The Exakta was one of the world's first SLR cameras and the Varex 11a is a refined mid-period version. The Pancolar 50mm f/2 uses Zeiss Jena's Tessar-derivative Pancolar design with T (anti-reflection) coating.
Exakta bayonet mount, 35mm SLR, left-hand shutter release (characteristic Exakta design), interchangeable viewfinders, 1/1000s maximum shutter speed, bundled with Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50mm f/2 T-coated lens.
The Exakta Varex 11a was the professional choice for scientists, doctors, and photo-journalists in the 1950s–1960s for its interchangeable viewfinder and unique left-hand shutter release. The Pancolar 50mm f/2 is a highly regarded Zeiss Jena lens with excellent rendering at all apertures. A significant historical camera representing East German optical manufacturing.
Test the unique left-hand shutter release mechanism — it should fire cleanly without sticking. Check shutter accuracy at multiple speeds. Inspect the Pancolar 50mm elements for fungus, haze, and T-coating condition. Confirm Exakta bayonet engagement and release operate correctly. Check light seals and viewfinder clarity.
