The FinePix A850 was an affordable point-and-shoot announced by Fujifilm on 22 May 2008 and available from July 2008. It was one of the last models in the long-running entry-level A-series, which was being wound down as the FinePix J-series took over Fujifilm's budget compact slot that same year.
It is built around an 8.1-megapixel 1/2.5in CCD recording up to 3,264x2,448 pixels, with a Fujinon 3x optical zoom equivalent to 36-108mm. A 2.5in LCD handles framing and playback, and 24MB of internal memory supplements the card slot, with period retail listings showing SD/SDHC card support. Fujifilm's Picture Stabilisation mode raises sensitivity to fight blur, ISO reaches 800 at full resolution, and 14 scene modes cover common situations. Power comes from two standard AA batteries.
The A850 was designed for families and first-time buyers who wanted decent prints with no learning curve, and that remains its character used: switch on, leave it in auto and shoot. There is no true optical stabilisation and the small sensor struggles as light falls, but daylight results from the CCD are clean and colourful for the class.
Used examples are inexpensive and easy to live with thanks to AA power — no proprietary charger to hunt down. Confirm which memory card type the specific example takes and whether one is included, check the battery door latch and contacts, and look for the usual CCD-era issues of scratched screens and dust in the lens.
