Fujifilm FinePix J12 — entry-level AA-battery digital compact, 10MP, 3x zoom, c.2009

The FinePix J12 is an entry-level digital compact from Fujifilm's J series, launched in the late 2000s as an affordable point-and-shoot for buyers moving on from film or wanting a simple backup camera. It sat toward the budget end of Fujifilm's FinePix compact range.

It uses a small 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor delivering a resolution in the 10-megapixel class, behind a 3x optical zoom lens covering a modest wide-to-short-telephoto range. Images are composed on a 2.7-inch rear LCD, files are stored on SD/SDHC cards, and power comes from two AA batteries rather than a proprietary pack.

The AA-battery design is the J12's defining trait, letting owners buy replacements anywhere rather than tracking down a specific charger, at the cost of a slightly chunkier body than lithium-powered rivals. Automatic scene modes and simple menus keep operation straightforward for non-enthusiasts.

Secondhand units are inexpensive and common. Worth checking the battery contacts for corrosion, confirming the zoom lens extends and retracts cleanly, testing the LCD for dead pixels, and verifying the memory card slot and door latch still work reliably.
