Fujifilm's ultra-wide GFX medium format prime, covering 18mm equivalent on a huge sensor.
The Fujifilm Fujinon GF 23mm f/4 R LM WR is an ultra-wide prime for the Fujifilm GFX medium-format system, introduced in 2017 alongside the GFX 50S. On GFX bodies the 23mm focal length provides an approximately 18mm full-frame equivalent field of view — ultra-wide territory suited to architecture, interior, landscape, and environmental portraiture. The LM designation indicates a linear motor autofocus; WR indicates weather resistance rated at nine sealing points. The aperture ring (R) provides direct tactile control consistent across the GF prime lineup.
The optical design uses 15 elements in 12 groups, including two aspherical elements, one Super ED element, and three ED elements. The 82mm filter thread is consistent with other wide GF primes and GFX-compatible wide adapters — filter collections built around 82mm are usable across the GF ultra-wide range. At 845g the lens is substantial; the medium-format optical formula and large image circle require correspondingly large front elements. Minimum focus distance of 0.38m enables close environmental framing with full ultra-wide context at short subject distances. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The linear motor provides fast, near-silent autofocus. Nano GI coating reduces ghosting and flare. Weather sealing operates to -10°C.
For GFX landscape, architecture, and interior photography the GF 23mm provides the widest standard perspective in the GF prime lineup, covering situations requiring environmental context and foreground-to-background depth. The 18mm full-frame equivalent field of view is notably wider than APS-C ultra-wide options; on GFX bodies the larger sensor captures proportionally more information per frame at equivalent resolution settings. The 0.38m minimum focus enables close foreground subjects with extreme wide-angle depth-of-field rendering. Weather sealing makes it a practical field lens for outdoor use in variable conditions.
On the used market the GF 23mm is a specialised product within the GFX ecosystem, with pricing reflecting medium-format premium lens positioning. Condition checks: LM motor response, weather sealing at the mount and aperture ring, and front element for any scratches or haze. The Fujifilm GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR (2021) provides a wider zoom range at higher cost; the GF 23mm is the prime alternative for photographers who prefer the depth-of-field characteristics and lighter weight of a fixed focal length. Compatible with all GFX-mount bodies.
