Fujifilm's original medium format mirrorless — 51.4MP GFX sensor in a modular body design.
The Fujifilm GFX 50S was released in 2017 as Fujifilm's inaugural GFX medium format mirrorless, featuring a 51.4MP 43.8×32.9mm CMOS sensor. 3fps burst. The EVF (EVF-GFX1, 3.69M-dot OLED) is detachable and repositionable — it can be tilted or removed for studio use. No IBIS — in-body stabilisation was introduced in the GFX 50S II (2021). NP-T125 battery. 740g body only.
51.4MP medium format CMOS (43.8×32.9mm). 3fps burst. Detachable and repositionable 3.69M-dot OLED EVF (EVF-GFX1 accessory shipped with body). No IBIS — passive stabilisation only. NP-T125 battery. Body weight 740g without EVF; approximately 825g with EVF fitted. Fujifilm GF mount.
The GFX 50S's detachable repositionable EVF was a practical innovation for medium format studio and location work: the EVF can be removed for shooting on a tripod with rear LCD, tilted for low-angle shooting, or left in place for hand-held use. The absence of IBIS reflects the 2017 design priority of sensor resolution and image quality over stabilisation — medium format work typically uses tripod support.
On the used market the Fujifilm GFX 50S is affordable as the original GFX entry point. Condition checks: sensor dust (medium format sensors are large and prominent), EVF-GFX1 unit condition and hinge, NP-T125 battery health. No IBIS. Compatible with all Fujifilm GF-mount medium format lenses.
