Fujifilm's ultra-compact X-mount body without a viewfinder, aimed at casual shooters.
The Fujifilm X-M1 was released in mid-2013 as the most accessible entry point into the X-Trans CMOS sensor system, designed without a built-in viewfinder and without any external EVF attachment option — a deliberate simplification that reduced size and cost compared to the X-E1. The 16.3MP X-Trans CMOS sensor without an optical low-pass filter was the primary attraction: X-Trans colour science and rendering in a very compact body, relying entirely on the 3.0-inch tilting rear LCD for composition. The X-M1 was aimed at photographers stepping up from smartphone or compact cameras.
The 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor pairs with the EXR Processor II. Autofocus uses contrast-detect only with 49 selectable points — no phase-detect AF. Burst shooting runs at 5.6fps. 1080p video records at up to 30fps. The tilting 3.0-inch 921k-dot LCD is the sole composition option — there is no hot-shoe port for an external electronic viewfinder. Battery life approximately 350 shots using the NP-W126, body weight approximately 330g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The X-M1's practical strengths are X-Trans rendering and compact size at low cost. For casual and street photography in adequate light the 16.3MP X-Trans sensor provides colour fidelity and resolution that the entry-level sensor category typically does not deliver. The contrast-detect-only AF is reliable for static and moderately paced subjects; fast tracking is a limitation. The absence of any EVF option is the most significant practical constraint — outdoor bright-light composition on the LCD alone can be difficult compared to EVF-equipped bodies.
On the used market the X-M1 is very affordable as the entry point to the X-Trans ecosystem. Condition checks: tilting LCD hinge, NP-W126 battery health, and front contact pad and hot shoe. The NP-W126 battery is widely compatible across Fujifilm X-series bodies. The X-M5 (2024) is the current generation of the compact X-M concept with significantly updated specifications. Compatible with all Fujifilm X-mount lenses.
