Fujifilm's ultra-wide zoom for the X system with OIS, covering a dramatic 15-36mm equivalent.
The Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS was introduced in January 2014 as the first ultra-wide zoom for the Fujifilm X-mount APS-C system. Covering a 15-36mm equivalent field of view on X-series bodies, it addressed a gap in the XF lineup for architecture, landscapes, interiors, and environmental portraiture that the existing primes could not fill. The aperture ring (R designation) and built-in OIS distinguished it within its category. A weather-resistant WR version followed in 2020 with a revised, lighter construction and added dust and splash protection.
The optical design uses 14 elements in 10 groups, including four aspherical and four ED elements. The 72mm filter thread is specific to this lens within the standard XF lineup — a dedicated 72mm filter set is typically required rather than carry-over from XF primes. At approximately 410g the lens is noticeably heavier than most XF primes, reflecting the front-element demands of an ultra-wide constant-aperture formula. Minimum focus distance is 0.24m, enabling close environmental shots with the pronounced wide-angle perspective at short subject distances. OIS provides built-in stabilisation, particularly useful for architecture and interior work in ambient light. The aperture ring provides direct tactile control. There is no weather sealing in the original non-WR version.
For architecture, landscape, and environmental portraiture the 15-36mm equivalent range covers situations where APS-C standard zooms cannot go. The 0.24m minimum focus distance allows a compositional approach unique to ultra-wide lenses: the photographer can be very close to a foreground element while the full background remains in frame and in context. OIS aids handheld interior shooting where ambient light is limited and a tripod may not be practical. Optical quality is strong for an ultra-wide APS-C zoom at this price tier; some geometric distortion at 10mm is present and corrects cleanly with Fujifilm's in-camera profiles or RAW processor corrections.
On the used market the XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS is available at accessible prices. OIS operation should be confirmed. The 72mm filter thread requires a dedicated filter solution — existing filters from standard XF primes (typically 52mm or 58mm) will not fit. The WR version (2020) is recommended for photographers shooting in wet or dusty conditions; the price premium is typically modest. Condition checks: OIS engagement, aperture ring click action for consistent feel, and front element for cleaning marks that affect contrast when shooting into light at ultra-wide angles.
