Fujifilm's new standard zoom replacing the XF 18-55mm with faster aperture and weather sealing.
The Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR was released in 2024 as a compact standard kit zoom for the X-mount APS-C system, providing a 24-76mm full-frame equivalent range with a faster maximum aperture than most standard kit zooms. At 240g it is lighter than most competing standard zooms with equivalent aperture ranges. WR (weather resistance) is built in, enabling use in light rain with a sealed X-series body. LM (Linear Motor) provides fast, near-silent AF suited for video. The aperture ring (R) provides direct manual aperture control.
The optical design includes three aspherical and three ED elements for aberration control. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 58mm filter thread is standard for mid-range Fujifilm XF lenses. At 240g the lens is notably compact for its aperture range. Minimum focus distance of 0.24m enables moderate close-up framing. Linear motor provides fast, near-silent AF. Weather resistance requires pairing with a weather-sealed X-series body. Variable aperture from f/2.8 at 16mm to f/4.8 at 50mm.
The XF 16-50mm's practical position is as a compact, weather-resistant standard zoom that starts at f/2.8 at the wide end — providing more light-gathering at 24mm equivalent than the f/3.5-4 of most consumer kit zooms. At 240g it enables a compact X-series travel kit. LM motor enables smooth video AF tracking. Weather resistance extends the working envelope for outdoor and travel use in variable conditions. The variable aperture reaching f/4.8 at 50mm is the trade-off for the compact size.
The XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR is a 2024 product; used availability is limited. Condition checks: LM motor response for smooth video AF, weather sealing, aperture ring click consistency, and front element for marks. The Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR provides constant f/4 and OIS at similar prices but without the f/2.8 wide-end advantage. Compatible with all Fujifilm X-mount bodies.
