Fujifilm's tiny weather-sealed wide-angle prime, the most compact WR lens in the XF lineup.
The Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR was released in 2021 as a compact weather-resistant alternative to the faster XF 23mm f/1.4 R, designed for photographers who prioritise compact size and weather sealing over maximum aperture. The 23mm focal length provides a 35mm full-frame equivalent — the classic street photography perspective. At 90g it is among the lightest XF primes and enables an extremely compact X-series kit. The 39mm filter thread is the same diameter as the XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR.
The optical design uses 8 elements in 6 groups. Eleven rounded aperture blades produce particularly smooth circular bokeh and smooth 22-pointed sunstars when stopped down — more blades than any other standard XF prime. The 39mm filter thread requires a step-up ring for standard filter sizes but is shared with the XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR. At 90g the lens adds minimal weight to any X-series body. Minimum focus distance of 0.20m is close for a 35mm equivalent, enabling informal close-up work. Weather resistance requires a sealed X-series body for full system protection.
The 35mm equivalent is the foundational street photography and documentary focal length — wide enough for environmental context, tight enough for subject isolation at standard conversation distances. At f/2.8 the maximum aperture is two stops slower than the XF 23mm f/1.4, which is the principal trade-off for the reduced size and weight. The 11 rounded blades produce especially smooth bokeh at f/2.8-4, notable for a compact prime. Weather sealing makes it a practical outdoor and casual-weather companion.
On the used market the XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR is available at accessible prices. The XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR (2021) provides a faster aperture and linear-motor AF at a substantially higher price — the recommended choice if f/1.4 is required. The original XF 23mm f/1.4 R (non-LM, non-WR) is available at lower prices without weather sealing. Condition checks: aperture ring click consistency, AF motor response, and front element for any marks. Compatible with all Fujifilm X-mount bodies.
