Fujifilm's original pancake prime, a compact 41mm equivalent for the X-system.
The Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 (2013) is a compact pancake-style prime for Fujifilm X APS-C bodies, providing a 41mm full-frame equivalent perspective in the smallest and lightest XF prime. At 78g and 39mm filter thread it enables the most compact X-mount body-plus-lens pairing available. The lens was later succeeded by the XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR (2021) which added an aperture ring and weather resistance; the original has neither. The pancake form factor and 41mm equivalent make it a practical travel and street prime.
The optical design uses 7 elements in 5 groups, including one aspherical element. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 39mm filter thread is an uncommon small size. At 78g the lens is the lightest XF prime. Minimum focus distance of 0.34m. No aperture ring — aperture is set via the camera body's command dial or program mode. No optical image stabiliser and no weather sealing. f/2.8 maximum aperture.
The 41mm equivalent is positioned between the standard 35mm (50mm equivalent) and the XF 23mm f/2 (35mm equivalent) — providing a slightly longer than normal perspective for street and environmental work. At 78g the lens adds minimal weight to any X-mount body. The f/2.8 aperture is two stops behind the XF 35mm f/1.4, limiting selective focus and low-light capability compared to the faster primes. The compact form factor is the primary value proposition.
On the used market the XF 27mm f/2.8 original is very affordable as the entry Fujifilm X pancake prime. Condition checks: front element for marks, aperture operation (body-controlled), and overall barrel condition. The 2021 XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR adds an aperture ring and WR at a higher price. Compatible with all Fujifilm X-mount bodies.
