Fujifilm's original fast portrait prime with stunning bokeh and legendary rendering.
The Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R was launched in 2014 as Fujifilm's fastest XF prime. Providing an 85mm equivalent portrait perspective at f/1.2, it delivers extraordinarily shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh that rivals full-frame f/1.4 lenses. It established itself as the portrait lens in the Fujifilm X-system.
Optical quality wide open has a beautiful smooth character with excellent centre sharpness and a gentle falloff. Bokeh from the seven rounded aperture blades is creamy and distinctive. Stopped down to f/2 the lens is very sharp across the frame. Autofocus is driven by a DC motor that is adequate but not fast by modern standards.
Fujifilm X mount only, 62mm filter thread. The XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR was released in 2022 with weather sealing, improved AF motor, and updated optical formula. The original version is preferred by some for its distinctive rendering character. The XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR offers an even wider aperture.
Good value used. The AF motor speed is the main concern to test. Check the aperture ring and front element. The original version has a devoted following for its rendering. The WR version is technically better but some photographers actively prefer the original. One of the most emotionally compelling lenses in any system.
