Fujifilm's updated weather-resistant 85mm equiv portrait prime — f/1.2 with linear motor AF and WR.
The Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR was released in 2022 as the weather-resistant revision of the original XF 56mm f/1.2 R (2014), with a redesigned optical formula — 13 elements in 8 groups versus 11 in the original — and a larger 67mm filter thread (versus 62mm). Eleven rounded aperture blades (versus 7). Minimum focus distance improved from 0.70m to 0.50m. Linear motor AF added. At 445g.
The optical design uses 13 elements in 8 groups (new formula; original 2014 lens was 11 elements in 8 groups). Eleven rounded aperture blades. The 67mm filter thread (original was 62mm — note for filter kit users). At 445g the lens is moderate. Minimum focus distance of 0.50m (improved from 0.70m original). Linear motor for fast, quiet AF. WR sealing. f/1.2 maximum aperture.
The WR version improvements are substantive: the new optical formula was redesigned for improved wide-open correction; the filter thread increase from 62mm to 67mm reflects the larger front element group; and the MFD improvement from 0.70m to 0.50m enables closer portrait framing. The original 2014 non-WR lens remains optically different — this is not a rehousing of the same formula.
On the used market the XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR is available at mid-range Fujifilm X portrait prime pricing. Condition checks: linear AF response, WR sealing, 67mm front element for marks (note: 67mm, not 62mm of the original non-WR). Compatible with all Fujifilm X-mount APS-C bodies.
