Fujifilm's compact ultra-wide prime — the XF 8mm f/3.5 for dramatic 12mm-equivalent landscapes.
The Fujifilm XF 8mm f/3.5 R WR was released in 2023 as Fujifilm's widest prime for the X-mount system. Providing a 12mm equivalent field of view on APS-C, it offers a dramatically wide perspective in an impressively compact package. The WR designation indicates weather resistance — dust, moisture, and freeze protection to -10°C.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is excellent in the centre and good in the corners when stopped down. Distortion is well-controlled for such an extreme wide angle — straight lines stay reasonably straight. The f/3.5 aperture is adequate for landscape and architecture where the lens is typically stopped down anyway. The WR weather sealing adds practical value.
Fujifilm X mount, APS-C. Filter thread is 62mm — impressive for an 8mm lens, allowing standard filter use. Weight is approximately 215 grams — very compact. Build quality is good with weather resistance and a Fuji-style aperture ring. The compact size and filter thread compatibility make this an outstanding travel ultra-wide for the X system.
Limited used availability as a newer lens. Check AF and WR integrity. An excellent ultra-wide for Fuji X shooters — the combination of 12mm equivalent, filter compatibility, weather sealing, and compact size is outstanding. The Fujifilm XF 8-16mm f/2.8 is wider and faster but vastly larger and lacks front filters.
