GoPro's first waterproof-without-housing model — 4K action camera with voice control and GPS.
The GoPro Hero 5 Black was released in 2016 as GoPro's flagship action camera, featuring native 10m waterproofing without a housing — eliminating the dive housing required by earlier Hero models. 12MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS. 4K/30fps and 1080p/120fps. Electronic image stabilisation (EIS) is available but deactivated in 4K mode. At approximately 118g.
12MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS. 4K/30fps; 2.7K/60fps; 1080p/120fps; 720p/240fps. Natively waterproof to 10m without housing. Electronic image stabilisation (EIS) — active in non-4K modes; inactive in 4K due to insufficient pixel headroom for electronic crop. Approximately 118g. GP1 processor. Touch LCD rear screen. Voice control.
The native 10m waterproofing was a meaningful design shift from the Hero 4 which required a housing for any water submersion — eliminating the housing reduces size and weight for most water activities and general outdoor use. The EIS-in-non-4K limitation is a practical constraint: at 4K, there are no spare pixels for the EIS crop, so 4K footage requires a tripod, mount, or post-stabilisation for smooth results.
On the used market the GoPro Hero 5 Black is affordable as a vintage action camera. Condition checks: 10m waterproof seal condition (inspect port covers), USB-C and audio ports, lens element for scratches, and battery (Hero 5 Black proprietary battery — not Hero 6/7 compatible). Native waterproof to 10m. No interchangeable mount.
