GoPro's first with GP1 processor — 4K 60fps, HyperSmooth predecessor stabilisation, and touchscreen.
The GoPro Hero 6 Black was released in 2017, adding 4K/60fps video capability over the Hero 5 Black's 4K/30fps maximum — enabled by the custom GoPro GP1 chip. Natively waterproof to 10m without a housing. At 116g. Electronic image stabilisation is available in non-4K/60fps modes only — at 4K/60fps, EIS is deactivated due to insufficient pixel headroom.
1/2.3-inch CMOS, 12MP. 4K/60fps; 2.7K/120fps; 1080p/240fps. EIS (electronic) — active at 4K/30fps and below; inactive at 4K/60fps. Natively waterproof to 10m. 116g. Touch screen. Voice control. GP1 custom processor. USB-C.
The 4K/60fps is the Hero 6's headline upgrade over the Hero 5: 4K at 60fps enables 2.5x slow-motion in 4K when played back at 24fps, and provides the higher frame rate for smoother action footage. The EIS-off limitation at 4K/60fps means maximally smooth footage at this setting requires a mount or gimbal for stabilisation. The GP1 chip also improved dynamic range over the Hero 5.
On the used market the GoPro Hero 6 Black is affordable as a vintage action camera. Condition checks: 10m waterproof seal condition (inspect port covers), lens element for scratches, and battery (Hero 6 proprietary battery — not shared with Hero 5 Black). EIS off at 4K/60fps. No interchangeable mount.
