GoPro's dual-lens 360° action camera with PowerPano and Max HyperSmooth — waterproof to 5m.
The GoPro Max was released in October 2019 as GoPro's 360° spherical action camera, providing 5.6K 360° video from dual 180° lenses. In HERO mode (single lens, non-360) the Max records 1440p/60fps and 1080p/60fps. Max HyperSmooth electronic stabilisation provides horizon lock. At 154g the camera is lightweight for a 360° dual-lens body. A removable 1600mAh lithium-ion battery powers the unit. Waterproof to 5m without a housing.
The GoPro Max records 5.6K 360° video at 24/30fps using dual lenses. In HERO mode (single lens): 1440p/60fps and 1080p/60fps with Max HyperSmooth stabilisation and horizon lock. Front and rear touchscreen displays are included. Waterproof to 5m. Removable 1600mAh rechargeable battery. Body weight approximately 154g without mounting accessories. Compatible with GoPro's standard mounting accessory ecosystem.
The 5.6K 360° capture allows full post-production reframing — the spherical video can be cropped and reoriented to any directional output perspective after recording, meaning the shooter does not need to predict precise camera orientation before the shot. This is the defining advantage over a conventional action camera for run-and-gun documentary where camera positioning is impractical to optimise mid-action. HERO mode provides standard wide-angle video without the 360° processing overhead.
On the used market the GoPro Max is affordable as a 360° action camera. Condition checks: both lens surfaces for scratches — each lens must be unscratched for clean spherical capture — removable battery health, and both touchscreens for marks. Compatible with GoPro's standard mounting accessory ecosystem. Fixed dual-lens; no interchangeable mount.
