A medium format macro lens for Hasselblad V-system cameras.
The Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 120mm f/4 T* is the dedicated macro lens for the Hasselblad V-system, designed for 1:2 native reproduction (1:1 with the dedicated macro extension tube). Built by Carl Zeiss for Hasselblad, it doubles as an excellent close-focus portrait and fine-art lens with the compression characteristics of a 75mm equivalent on 35mm.
120mm focal length, f/4 maximum aperture, 1:2 macro native (1:1 with extension tube), Hasselblad V bayonet mount, built-in Compur leaf shutter (flash sync at all speeds), 60mm filter thread, T* multicoating.
The f/4 maximum aperture is conservative but results in a lighter design with generous working distance — important in macro shooting where minimal clearance risks disturbing subjects. The built-in leaf shutter enables full flash sync at any speed: essential for macro studio work with high-speed strobe. As a non-macro portrait lens the 120mm focal length delivers classic portrait compression. The Makro-Planar formula emphasises flat-field correction critical for document and copy work.
Test the leaf shutter at all speeds including 1/500s. Check aperture blades for oil contamination. Inspect T* coating condition — older T* coatings show cleaning wear readily. Verify Hasselblad V-mount bayonet coupling and flange distance (critical for macro accuracy). Test focus down to minimum focus distance and verify 1:2 reproduction ratio marking.
