Hasselblad's classic standard lens — the Zeiss Planar C 80mm f/2.8, the normal lens of the 6x6 V system.
The Carl Zeiss Planar C 80mm f/2.8 is the standard lens of the Hasselblad V system in its earliest C form, with the coupled leaf shutter and chrome-and-black barrel. It is the normal lens that shipped with the 500-series bodies for many years and is the most numerous lens in the whole system, defining the look of the classic 6x6 kit.
This is a manual-focus Hasselblad V lens with an integral leaf shutter, the C design coupling aperture and shutter through the linked ring. Its maximum aperture is f/2.8 and it covers the 6x6 frame as a Planar double-Gauss normal lens. It was made in single-coated chrome and later coated black C versions across a long production run, so the same optical family appears in several barrel styles.
As the system's normal lens the 80mm renders with the balanced, low-distortion drawing of the Planar formula, giving smooth tonal transitions that flatter portraits and hold up for general, landscape and documentary work. The out-of-focus rendering is gentle rather than showy, and the moderate field on 6x6 gives a natural perspective, which is why it remained the default lens for studio and location photographers alike.
The C 80mm is the most common V lens and among the most affordable, though clean early chrome examples are collectable. Check the coupled leaf shutter fires accurately at all speeds, inspect for haze, fungus and separation, and confirm the coating is free of heavy cleaning marks. Verify the focus and coupled ring move smoothly and the blades are dry; a slow C shutter is common with age and points to a service.
