A generic Hoya telephoto zoom for Olympus OM — a budget third-party lens from the film era.
The Hoya 80-200mm f/5.5 is a budget telephoto zoom from Hoya, better known as a filter manufacturer but also a producer of affordable third-party lenses during the film era. In Olympus OM mount, it provided basic telephoto coverage at a very low price. Hoya lenses are relatively uncommon and of limited optical ambition.
Optical performance is basic. Sharpness is acceptable in the centre when stopped down but unremarkable overall. The slow f/5.5 maximum aperture severely limits low-light capability and autofocus is not available. Adequate for daylight telephoto snapshots but not competitive with Olympus's own Zuiko telephoto options from the same era.
Olympus OM mount, manual focus only. Filter thread varies by version but is typically 52mm or 55mm. Weight is approximately 450 grams. Build quality is basic with a mix of metal and plastic construction. No electronic communication with the camera body. The lens adapts to mirrorless cameras via OM-mount adapters but offers nothing compelling compared to alternatives.
Very cheap on the used market when found — often under £15. Check for smooth zoom and focus operation and clean optics. Not a lens worth seeking out. Hoya's reputation rests on their filters, not their lenses. Any Olympus Zuiko telephoto zoom is a significantly better choice. Only of interest if bundled with an OM camera purchase.
