Jupiter's click-stop Sonnar fifty — Jupiter-8M 50mm f/2 in M39, smooth rendering, good used value.
The Jupiter-8M is a variant of the Sonnar-derived Jupiter-8 50mm f/2, produced in the Soviet rangefinder line for the M39 (Leica thread) mount. The 'M' denotes a version with a revised aperture arrangement, giving click-stopped aperture control on a lens that otherwise shares the Zeiss Sonnar optical lineage used across the FED, Zorki and Leningrad system.
This is a manual-focus, rangefinder-coupled Leica Thread Mount lens with a 50mm focal length and an f/2 maximum aperture. It uses the 39mm rangefinder thread and mounts on Leica screw bodies, subject to the slight register difference common to Soviet M39 glass. It is a compact standard lens sized for the rangefinder bodies it was intended to serve.
Optically the Jupiter-8M follows the Sonnar rendering of the Jupiter-8 family: smooth out-of-focus areas, gentle contrast wide open and increasing crispness as the aperture closes. The click-stopped ring makes it a little more deliberate to shoot than the front-ring Jupiter-8, and it suits portraits, street and general everyday use where a small, characterful fifty is wanted.
On the used market the Jupiter-8M sits alongside the plentiful Jupiter-8 and offers similar strong value for money. Soviet QC varied by year and factory, so evaluate each sample on its own. Adapting to Leica may call for a register check or shim to get accurate rangefinder focus. Check the aperture ring for even clicks and smooth feel, inspect for internal haze and coating wear, and test the focus helicoid. It adapts readily to mirrorless with an M39 adapter.
