Kodak's budget 40x superzoom bridge — 20MP CMOS, 24-960mm equiv, 1080p video, AA power
The PIXPRO AZ405 is a superzoom bridge camera in Kodak's Astro Zoom line, sold under the Kodak brand licence by JK Imaging. It sits in the middle of the PIXPRO bridge range between shorter-zoom models such as the AZ255 and the longer-reach AZ528, packaging big-lens reach into a compact SLR-styled body at a budget price.
A 20.6MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor sits behind a 40x optical zoom covering a 24-960mm equivalent range at f/3-f/6.8, with optical image stabilisation to steady the long end. Video tops out at 1080p at 30fps, framing is via a 3.0-inch 460k-dot LCD with no viewfinder fitted, storage is SD/SDHC/SDXC up to 512GB, and four AA batteries give roughly 300 shots per set.
Suits casual wildlife, holiday and travel shooters who want extreme reach without interchangeable lenses or a big outlay. AA power is convenient away from mains charging, but the small sensor limits low-light quality and the absence of a viewfinder makes the extreme telephoto end harder to hold steady in bright sun.
A recent model, so used prices track new-stock discounts closely. Check the zoom travels smoothly through its full range, confirm the stabiliser is working at full telephoto, and inspect the LCD for scratches since it is the only means of framing. AA power means battery availability is never a concern.
