Leica's redesigned R ultra-wide — the manual-focus Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8 (II), updated rectilinear optics.
The Leica Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8 (II) is the redesigned second version of Leica's 19mm ultra-wide rectilinear prime for the R reflex system. It replaced the earlier first version with an updated optical design and revised barrel, improving on the original while keeping the same 19mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture. It served as the R system's corrected ultra-wide below the 21mm.
This is a manual-focus Leica R lens with a 19mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Being rectilinear it keeps straight lines straight rather than bowing them as a fisheye would. The second version differs in optical formula and handling from the first, so confirm you are buying the later type if that is what you need, and verify the filter thread and cam configuration of the specific example.
The 19mm angle of view suits architecture, interiors and expansive landscapes where corrected geometry matters. Verticals stay upright and the wide coverage lets you work in confined spaces. Depth of field is generous when stopped down, giving broad sharpness for scenic and travel use.
On the used market the version II is generally the more sought-after of the two 19mm designs and prices reflect that. Be sure to distinguish it from the first version before buying. Inspect for haze, fungus and coating marks, confirm smooth focus and a clean dry aperture, and check the cam arrangement so the lens meters correctly on your R body; a Leica R adapter allows use on mirrorless.
