Leica's wide-angle prime for the R-mount SLR system — the Elmarit-R 28mm with professional optics.
The Leica Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 (3-Cam, V2) is a wide-angle prime for the Leica R-mount SLR system. The V2 designation indicates the second optical version with improved performance. The 3-Cam version provides maximum compatibility across the R-mount camera range. Leica's R-mount lenses are renowned for optical quality rivalling the M-mount line.
Optical performance is excellent — Leica R lenses were among the finest SLR optics ever produced. Sharpness is very good from f/2.8 and outstanding stopped down. The second version improved corner performance. Contrast and micro-contrast have the distinctive Leica signature. Colour rendition is neutral and accurate. An exceptional wide-angle by any standard.
Leica R mount, manual focus with 3-cam coupling for maximum body compatibility. Filter thread is 48mm (Series VII) or E55 depending on the version. Weight is approximately 310 grams. Build quality is outstanding with precision German engineering. The R-mount system is discontinued but lenses adapt well to mirrorless cameras via R-mount adapters.
Available on the used market at moderate prices — R-mount lenses are generally less expensive than M-mount equivalents despite comparable optical quality. Check for smooth focus ring, clean optics, and correct cam configuration. Adapts excellently to Sony E-mount and Leica SL via adapters. One of the best value paths to Leica wide-angle optics.
