Leica's redesigned R moderate wide — the manual-focus Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 (II), updated compact optics.
The Leica Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 (II) is the redesigned second version of Leica's 28mm wide-angle prime for the R reflex system. It replaced the earlier first version with an updated optical design while retaining the 28mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture. It served as a compact moderate wide for reportage, landscape and general R photography.
This is a manual-focus Leica R lens with a 28mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. It is a rectilinear retrofocus wide for the reflex line, revised from the first version in optical formula and handling. Confirm the cam configuration and filter thread of the individual lens, and make sure you are buying the version II rather than the earlier type.
The 28mm view is a practical moderate wide for landscapes, architecture, street and environmental portraits, giving more context than a 35mm while holding straight verticals. It works well in confined interiors and travel situations. The f/2.8 maximum aperture supports handheld shooting in weaker light.
On the used market the version II is often preferred over the first design and prices reflect that. Distinguish it clearly from the version I before buying. Inspect for internal haze, fungus and coating marks, confirm smooth focus and a clean dry aperture, and check the cam setup for correct metering on your R body; a Leica R adapter allows mounting on mirrorless bodies.
