Leica's updated R portrait tele — the manual-focus Elmarit-R 90mm f/2.8 (II), a redesigned short telephoto.
The Leica Elmarit-R 90mm f/2.8 (II) is the redesigned second version of Leica's 90mm short-telephoto prime for the R reflex system. It replaced the earlier first version, keeping the 90mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture while updating the optical design and barrel. It remained a popular portrait and short-telephoto lens in the R line.
This is a manual-focus Leica R lens with a 90mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2.8, revised from the first version. It is a full-frame short-telephoto prime for the reflex line. Confirm the cam configuration and filter thread of the individual lens, and make sure you are buying the version II rather than the earlier design.
At 90mm the perspective is flattering for portraits, and the f/2.8 aperture separates the subject from the background while keeping the lens compact. It suits portraits, general photography and travel where a light short telephoto is preferred. The focal length also handles details and tighter framing of distant subjects well.
On the used market the version II is regarded as a fine, attainable R portrait lens and is often the more available of the two designs. Distinguish it from the version I before buying. Check for haze, fungus and coating wear, confirm the aperture blades are clean and dry, and test the focus action. Verify the cam arrangement for correct metering on your R body; a Leica R adapter allows mirrorless use.
