The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) was released approximately 2015 as the second-generation Leica M Monochrom, replacing the original M Monochrom (based on the M9 CCD platform) with a 24MP BSI CMOS sensor derived from the Leica M (Typ 240). Designed exclusively for monochrome photography — the sensor has no Bayer colour filter. Leica M mount.

24MP BSI CMOS sensor (monochrome-only — no colour filter array). ISO 320-25000 (extended to 25000 versus the M9-based Typ 246 predecessor). Leica M mount. Full-frame rangefinder body. 3-inch LCD. No video recording (firmware limited). At approximately 680g.

The absence of the Bayer colour filter allows each pixel to receive full light from all wavelengths, providing approximately one stop of light sensitivity advantage over an equivalent colour sensor, and eliminating the demosaicing process that introduces interpolated resolution artefacts. The result is higher per-pixel resolution and improved high-ISO quality compared to a colour-filtered sensor of the same megapixel count. The rangefinder provides the traditional Leica M shooting experience for zone-focus and manual-focus work.
