Leica's mechanical M film rangefinder — hand-finished brass body for purist 35mm film photography.
The Leica MP was released in 2003 as a mechanical all-manual 35mm film rangefinder for Leica M-mount. Shutter speeds 1s-1/1000s (mechanical cloth focal-plane) plus Bulb. Flash sync at 1/50s. TTL centre-weighted metering (LED match-needle display) — meter requires a single SR44 battery but the camera operates fully without it. Viewfinder magnification 0.72× (standard; 0.58× and 0.85× versions also produced). At approximately 585g body without battery.
35mm film (24×36mm frames). Mechanical cloth focal-plane shutter: 1s–1/1000s (stepwise) + B. Flash sync at 1/50s. Built-in TTL centre-weighted metering (LED display: two triangular + one circular LED match-needle); meter is battery-dependent (SR44/LR44) but camera operates mechanically without battery. Viewfinder 0.72× magnification (standard). Approximately 585g without battery. Leica M bayonet mount.
The MP is a mechanical descendant of the classic Leica M3/M4/M6 line: the shutter, rangefinder, and film transport mechanisms are fully mechanical with no electronic dependence for shutter operation. The TTL meter adds practical exposure assistance while preserving the mechanical robustness. Unlike the Leica M-A (which has no meter at all), the MP provides metering when a battery is present. The 0.72× viewfinder is the standard magnification providing the most versatile frameline coverage across wide and standard lenses.
On the used market the Leica MP is available at Leica film rangefinder pricing. Condition checks: rangefinder alignment (critical for accurate focus), shutter speeds at all settings, cloth shutter curtain for pinholes (inspect in dark room), meter function with fresh SR44 battery. Film camera. Compatible with all Leica M-mount lenses.
