The Leica R3 (1976) is the first Leica R-series SLR produced through the Leica–Minolta partnership, effectively based on the Minolta XE-7 platform adapted with Leica's optical and finishing standards. It was the first Leica SLR with a programmed exposure mode (P). Uses Leica R-mount (also called Leicaflex R or Leica R bayonet).

35mm SLR, Leica R mount (3-cam bayonet), multi-mode AE (P/A/S/M), TTL metering, Copal metal shutter (1/2–1/1000s), viewfinder with LED exposure display.

The R3's Minolta heritage is evident in its operation — it is similar to the Minolta XE-7 in metering and shutter design, finished to Leica standards. Leica R lenses use a 3-cam bayonet; older 2-cam and 1-cam lenses are mechanically compatible but provide reduced metering modes. The R-system represents Leica's SLR era; a smaller but dedicated user base maintains the system.
