Leica's 1980 R-series SLR — the first R-body with Program and Shutter-priority modes alongside full manual control.

The Leica R4 (1980) is the second Leica R-series SLR from the Leica–Minolta partnership, refining the R3 with more exposure modes and improved ergonomics. It added Shutter Priority (S) and a Metered Manual mode to the existing Program and Aperture Priority modes. The R4's exposure system was considered advanced for its era.

35mm SLR, Leica R mount (3-cam bayonet), multi-mode AE (P/A/S/M), TTL metering, Copal metal shutter (1–1/1000s), LED viewfinder display.

The R4 is the definitive R-series body for users wanting all four exposure modes — Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Metered Manual. The R4 Mot variant accepts a winder; the R4S (1983) is a simplified derivative. Leica R lenses are interchangeable across R3–R7 bodies; 3-cam lenses provide full metering on all bodies. A capable SLR for Leica R glass users.

Test all four exposure modes (P/A/S/M). Check TTL metering accuracy. Test shutter at all speeds. Inspect viewfinder for haze. Check R-mount coupling and 3-cam metering engagement. Test self-timer. Inspect light seals.
