The Leica R6 (1988) is a fully mechanical Leica R-series SLR — a deliberate return to all-mechanical shutter operation without electronic program modes. It was designed for photographers who valued battery-independent reliability above automation, continuing the Leica tradition of mechanical precision. The R6 uses an all-metal shutter.

35mm SLR, Leica R mount (3-cam bayonet), mechanical shutter (1–1/1000s + Bulb), centre-weighted TTL metering, aperture-priority AE and metered manual only (no program or shutter priority), fully mechanical operation (shutter fires without battery).

The R6 is unique in the Leica R line for its emphasis on mechanical reliability — the shutter fires without battery power, making it operational in battery-failure and extreme temperature scenarios where electronic cameras fail. The trade-off is the absence of Program and Shutter Priority modes. The R6.2 (1992) added a 1/2000s maximum shutter speed. A purist's choice among Leica R bodies.
