Leica's expected entry SL mirrorless — successor to SL2-S with improved AF and features.
The Leica SL3-S was released in April 2024 as the video-optimised variant of the Leica SL3, pairing a 24.6MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor with high-speed continuous shooting (30fps) and 6K video capabilities. Where the SL3 prioritises resolution (60MP) for studio and landscape photography, the SL3-S trades resolution for speed and video performance — the same product strategy as Sony A7R V vs A9 III. Leica L-mount.
24.6MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor (48MP and 96MP multishot modes available). Up to 30fps continuous with AF. 6K Open Gate 30fps internal recording; 5.8K ProRes 422 HQ internal; 5.9K 12-bit RAW via HDMI (external recorder). 4K at up to 60fps. In-body image stabilisation. Hybrid PDAF with subject recognition. Dual memory card slots. IP-54 dust and splash sealing. ISO 50–200,000. Maestro IV image processor. 850g. L-mount.
The SL3-S's 24.6MP sensor provides manageable file sizes at 30fps — at 60MP (the SL3), sustained 30fps RAW burst fills buffers and storage rapidly; at 24.6MP the throughput is practical for event and documentary work. The 6K internal recording and 30fps burst make the SL3-S the SL system's action and video specialist. Compared to the SL3: same Maestro IV processor, same IP-54, same L-mount — different sensor for different primary use cases.
On the used market the Leica SL3-S is a 2024-release body at Leica SL pricing. Condition checks: IP-54 seal integrity, dual card slot operation, 6K video recording function, IBIS operation, sensor dust, battery (BP-SCL6). L-mount accepts Leica SL, TL, Panasonic S, and Sigma L-mount lenses.
