Leica's faster Summaron — the 35mm f/2.8, coated screw-mount rangefinder wide-angle.
The Summaron 35mm f/2.8 is the faster development of the Summaron wide-angle, introduced in the late 1950s. Sold in Leica Thread Mount, it gave screw-mount users a brighter 35mm than the f/3.5 version and shared its era with the transition to the M-system Summaron.
This is a manual-focus, rangefinder-coupled Leica Thread Mount lens with a 35mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. It is a coated design in a compact chrome barrel. Confirm the filter size and construction details of the specific example, as the Summaron was made in both screw and goggled M forms.
At 35mm f/2.8 this is a slightly faster general wide-angle for street, travel, reportage and landscape use, with the extra half-stop useful in dimmer light. The coated glass gives clean contrast for its period and the classic even rendering associated with the Summaron line.
This is desirable collector glass and values track condition and originality. Inspect for haze and cleaning marks, coating wear or scratches, and element separation; check smooth focus, dry aperture blades and accurate rangefinder coupling. It adapts to Leica M via a 39-to-M adapter and to mirrorless with an L39 adapter.
