Leica's fast R reportage wide — the manual-focus Summicron-R 35mm f/2 (I), the original bright 35mm.
The Leica Summicron-R 35mm f/2 (I) is the first version of Leica's fast 35mm prime for the R reflex system. It offered a brighter f/2 aperture than the Elmarit-R 35mm and became a favoured reportage lens for R users. As the original design it was later followed by a redesigned second version, so the two are distinguished by their construction.
This is a manual-focus Leica R lens with a 35mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2. It is a rectilinear retrofocus wide-standard for the reflex line. Because the first and second versions differ optically, buyers should confirm which version they are buying and verify the filter thread and cam configuration on the specific example.
The 35mm focal length with an f/2 aperture is a natural choice for street, documentary and available-light work, giving environmental context with enough speed for dimmer conditions. Perspective is close to natural, avoiding wide-angle exaggeration. It handles interiors, reportage and travel where a fast moderate wide is wanted.
On the used market the first-version Summicron-R 35mm is sought after and should be distinguished from the version II before buying, since they differ in value and rendering. Check for internal haze, fungus and coating marks, confirm a clean dry aperture and smooth focus, and inspect the front element. Verify the cam setup for correct metering on your R body; a Leica R adapter permits mirrorless use.
