Leica's vintage long telephoto — the Telyt 280mm in Leica Thread Mount for rangefinder photography.
The Leica Telyt 280mm f/4.8 is a vintage long telephoto lens for Leica's thread mount (LTM/L39) system, produced from the early 1960s. At 280mm on a rangefinder camera, it was an extreme telephoto for the era — far beyond the rangefinder's coupled focusing range, requiring the Visoflex reflex housing or distance estimation for focusing.
Optical performance is good for the era and focal length. Sharpness is respectable when stopped down. The f/4.8 aperture is modest but typical for telephoto lenses of this period. The Leitz optical quality ensures good colour rendition and contrast. As a vintage Leica telephoto, it has more historical and collector value than practical utility today.
Leica Thread Mount (LTM/L39) — requires the Visoflex reflex housing for practical SLR-style focusing at this focal length. Filter thread is Series VI or E55 depending on version. Weight is approximately 800 grams. Build quality is outstanding Leitz precision engineering with chrome and brass construction. Extends via a built-in focusing helicoid.
Available on the used market at collector prices — vintage Leica telephoto lenses are collectible. Check for smooth helicoid and clean optics. Primarily of interest to Leica collectors and vintage Leica system completists. The Visoflex housing is essentially required for practical use. A piece of Leica rangefinder telephoto history.
