Classic collapsible standard prime lens for Leica LTM (M39) cameras.
The Leitz Elmar 50mm f/3.5 is one of the most historically significant lenses ever produced — the original lens supplied with the Leica I (Barnack Leica) from 1925, effectively the lens that established 35mm photography as a viable medium. Produced in vast numbers through various revisions until the 1960s in both collapsible and rigid versions, for the Leica Thread Mount (LTM/L39).
50mm focal length, f/3.5 maximum aperture, four-element Elmar formula, Leica Thread Mount (LTM/L39), collapsible or rigid barrel depending on variant, rangefinder-coupled (on later models).
The Elmar 50mm f/3.5 is a piece of photographic history — the lens that proved 35mm film could produce publishable-quality images. Sharp at f/5.6 and beyond, with the characteristic single-coated or uncoated rendering of pre-war and early post-war glass. Stopping down to f/8 produces excellent images by any modern standard.
Inspect all elements for haze, cleaning marks, and coating condition — early Elmar versions are uncoated or early single-coated, and coating damage is common. Test the collapsing or extension mechanism if applicable. Verify L39 thread engagement. Test rangefinder coupling on later variants. Check aperture blades.
