Makinon — 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 manual-focus zoom lens for Pentax K, Canon FD, Minolta MD, Nikon F
Makina Optical Co. of Tokyo, active from 1967, sold this mid-range zoom under its own Makinon name from the mid-1970s after years building OEM optics for brands including Vivitar and Hanimex. It was aimed at manual-focus SLR owners wanting one lens to span standard-to-telephoto work.
Sold in Pentax K, Canon FD, Minolta MD and Nikon F mounts, it covers 35-105mm at a variable f/3.5-4.5 aperture through a 62mm filter thread and, on at least one mount version, an eight-blade iris. Weight is reported between roughly 540g and 690g depending on mount, with a macro-focusing mode down to about 0.35m.
As a general-purpose 3x zoom rather than a wide-aperture specialist, it prioritised range and a workable macro-focusing mode over the constant-aperture designs sold by premium third-party makers of the period. Like most budget zooms of its generation, sharpness and contrast are typically reported as strongest a stop or two down from maximum aperture.
It appears regularly and inexpensively secondhand across its four mounts, most often in Pentax K, Canon FD and Minolta MD. Worth checking that the zoom and macro rings move smoothly, that the aperture stops down cleanly, and that the elements are free of the haze and fungus common in lenses stored for decades.
